Field map resetting in modelbuilder

Question

I am using ArcGIS Pro 3.4.3 with everything stored in File Geodatabases.

I made a model not very long ago, one of the first steps of which was to Select a layer by location, then export this using the Export Features tool, and in that process drop several of the fields and rename several others using the field map. It was running fine when I last used it a couple of months ago. I just tried it now and it failed on one of the later steps, because the field map has been reset. It now contains all of the original fields, none of them renamed. Does anyone know why this happened and how to prevent it?

@DuncanHornby I just tried the case, not sure I am seeing the same issue with 3.6.

Just to confirm, please could you share some steps and what you see after the model runs. I can retry just to make sure I am following the exact steps.

I just upgraded and tested on 3.5.4
and its still a bug

I have the same issue in arc pro 3.3 using the buffer then append tool. And as soon as you run the model once, or change anything, all the field mappings are lost - and the tools cannot even read back to the input or target layers attribute fields.
