Bring back the Default Folder and Default Database buttons in file dialog windows

Pro uses seemingly random paths when opening a file dialog window to browse to a location when saving or opening anything.

If it decided to use a project you last touched a year ago as the location when the window opens there is no easy way to get to your default location other than by navigating to it as you would any other folder/database.
Depending on how many folders or databases you have in a project, the sluggish nature of Pro means browsing Project > Databases or Project > Folders to get to the default location takes longer than the same action in ArcMap.

Returning these buttons to the dialog window WILL save valuable time and mouse clicks.
I'd love to see the reasoning behind & justification for removing them.

The design is different in Pro for getting to the home folder. Click the path drop-down and the home folder is always pinned to the top:

I understand that doesn't address the default geodatabase but wanted to share this with you in hopes that it helps your work.

Thanks Kory, but no.

The home folder is used a lot less than the home database (in our case).

If the metrics of clicks/scrolls per task were in use at all when measuring feature parity with ArcMap/Catalog I am sure the design outcome would be different.

Looking at the drop-down behaviour - do you think it would be a good outcome if it listed all the project folders at the top first before showing the history? Granted - there is no point as it takes the same number of clicks to achieve the outcome as clicking on 'Folders' in the left tree.

Having the two home buttons back would still cut a click and a move each & every time any global user wants to interact with their home folder or home database.

On a related note, multiple users in my organization have suffered minor panic attacks when they click on "This PC" to navigate to their default folder only to find it apparently missing from the drive.

It turns out that once they make a folder the default folder, it no longer appears in its actual location when they navigate to it the long way rather than by using the Folders shortcut or the dropdown menu.

Personally, I think a folder should always appear in its location regardless of whether it's the default folder and regardless of how it's accessed.

In this screenshot, you can see that the default folder is RSQ1806.01, and that folder is missing from the alphabetical list of folders in its parent folder when I navigate to it via "This PC" under "Computer":

Is this by design? A bug? I don't think I ever noticed the issue until the last couple months (but I usually navigate to my default folder via the "Folders" folder of folder connections located under "Project" at the top left). It could be that I'm just hearing more about it as we get more people in our organization using Pro.

We don't have an E: drive. The default folder (with home icon) is at the top of the list that is exposed when I click the down arrow at the top of the dialog. I can also see it as expected if I click Folders at the top left (see below).

However, if I scroll down and click on This PC under Computer, and then navigate to the folder's location, it is not visible while it's the default folder in the project. A lot of our users tend to do this before they get used to using the shortcuts that are available. Then they start to panic thinking their folder has been deleted from the drive.

I'm not sure that this happens in every dialog, but I'm able to reproduce it with the Export Features dialog.

In 3.1.1 this is what I see when I have a folder from a mapped network drive (I:) set as the project's default folder and I browse to it in the Output Feature Class dialog...

That's right, I forgot that the reason the folder appears to be missing is that it moves to the top of the list of otherwise alphabetized folders. This might not be a big deal in a folder or drive that only contains a few folders, but for drives with a very flat folder structure with a huge number of folders at the same level as the default folder, it's not obvious at all. Users immediately start scrolling to where they expect the folder to be.

I guess what I'm saying is that it would be great if the default folder would just remain in its expected sort position rather than being promoted to the top of an otherwise alphabetical list (see screenshot below).

@HollyTorpey_LSA The default sort is not alphabetical. If users prefer the contents to be listed alphabetically, they can sort on the Name column and they'll find that the default folder is no longer at the top, rather listed in alphabetical order.

What is the default sort, then? Everything else in the folder is sorted alphabetically (when you arrive there via Computer > This PC). It's just that one folder that's out of the expected order. And users would have to already have an understanding of this behavior to know that they needed to sort on the name field to make the folder jump back into its usual position. It's not intuitive.

As I mentioned earlier, it has confused multiple users in my organization. When I explain to them that it's not really missing, but rather it's just not where they expect it to be because it's the default folder, they are unamused, to put it mildly.

Causes the same "folder is missing" shock as 'losing' the default folder.

Add shortcut buttons for default folder & default gdb back into Catalog pane view.

There is a lot of open space to add the buttons back to get parity with ArcMap:

While working with a number of data sources, folders & databases there is currently no quick way to get back to your default folder or database. Add the weird sorting Pro uses and it becomes a scroll-fest.
In ArcMap it was just a click away.

Hi @KoryKramer - Based on Esri's treatment of previous ideas these two ideas are not the same and should be kept separate to not confuse the issue.

One is for the Catalog Pane and the other for the file dialog browser.

If you see them as the same, please ensure that both are incorporated at the same time.
