Zooming into layers when clicking a button

Hi I am looking to have list of buttons people can press to zoom into the layer

Can I just have people select the layer and zoom in?

my issues:

why do I have to double click the whole button to make it pan to layer? why can't I just click the button once?

I create a new list widget every time is there a better way of doing this? 

also can the old layer not be highlighed?
