I'm developing an add-in where I would like to highlight some layers (which belong to geodatabase specified by user) in Contents Pane, e.g. by using different color or some small icon like esri has done here:

To my knowledge, it is not possible yet. But you can customize the quick launch bar which can been arrange to appear under your ribbon at the top of of the TOC.
