In the rapidly evolving field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), professional development has become essential for standing out among peers. This development can take various forms, such as pursuing further education, attending industry conferences, or seeking the Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) certification from the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI).

The GISP certification is widely recognized as a benchmark of excellence in the geospatial profession. It allows professionals to showcase their expertise, knowledge, and dedication to the GIS field. To earn this certification, candidates must pass a comprehensive exam and submit a portfolio that highlights their educational achievements, professional experience, contributions to the GIS community, and any relevant extracurricular activities.

According to GISCI, active participation in a professional organization, such as the Esri Young Professionals Network (YPN), can enhance a GISP candidate's portfolio. Here are some of the ways you can get GISP contribution points through becoming a YPN Ambassador.

GIS-Related Professional Association Involvement

In section II of the GISP Contributions Point Schedule: GIS-Related Professional Association Involvement, you can gain one point by being involved in an association or be a member of an organization.

Esri YPN qualifies as involvement in a GIS-related professional association through becoming a YPN Ambassador.

This document outlines the steps in becoming a YPN Ambassador which include being active on the YPN Esri Community as well as social platforms like LinkedIn. Apply to get your YPN Ambassador badge and certificate once all the steps are completed, which can serve as proof of being an active member of an organization and receiving GISP contribution points.

GIS Publications

You can gain GIS Publication contribution points for publishing an article. Esri YPN allows you to do that through becoming a YPN Content Ambassador.

Becoming a YPN Content Ambassador requires you to publish and promote a blog post hosted on the YPN Blog on Esri Community. Once your blog is published, you can apply to get your YPN Ambassador badge and certificate as proof of completion helping you accumulate points for your portfolio.

Other GIS Contributions

You can gain contribution points in the category of Other GIS Contributions by becoming a YPN Event Ambassador. The steps to become an event ambassador require participate in virtual or in-person events hosted by Esri YPN. You’re also able to organize your own event and include Esri YPN as a talking point. Once you’ve completed the criteria to becoming a YPN Event Ambassador, you can apply to get your badge and certificate as proof of completion to earn points under the category of Other GIS Contributions.

Thanks for outlining this! I know the GISP contributions section is something I have had numerous questions about what counts and what doesn't.

It is very exciting that participation in Esri's YPN can help earn GISP points! Do you have any other recommendations for earning GISP points?

Are there other ways that being part of the YPN can enhance an application for a GISP aspirant?
