Hi, there
I tried to publish map service with one feature class to ArcGIS online but failed. The error message says "packaging succeeded, but publishing failed." Failed to execute (uploadServiceDefinition). Can someone help me if you have experience on this.

Thanks,
Amy

Typically, this error is due to tool parameters referencing data that no longer exists. Try the following:

?In the Results window, right-click the results for which you are creating the service and choose Open. This will open the tool dialog box. If there are any errors  (typically, these will be for data that doesn't exist), fix them and rerun the tool. If the tool executes successfully, publish the corresponding result.
?In the Results window, there will be a result for the execution of the Stage Service tool. Stage Service is executed whenever you publish a service. Expand the Stage Service result, then expand Messages. The messages will give you specifics about why your result could not be published.

Thank you so much for pointing me to the right direction. I found out that the stage service ran successfully but the upload service definition was failed and the error was  "Service Definition: Dataset C:\Documents and Settings\chen\Local Settings\Application Data\ESRI\Desktop10.1\Staging\My Hosted Services\msdcips.sd does not exist or is not supported"

For data source, should I use shape file or file geodatabase or SDE? thanks again for your help

Amy,

Did you ever find a solution to this? I realize it's an older post, but i'm having the exact same problem right now.

Thanks!

No, I didn't. We actually switched to use our own map service.

Same problem here - trying to publish a simple feature service from ArcGIS 10.2 desktop to AGOL.

Get error message "Failed to execute (UploadServiceDefinition)."

Results window states "Packaging succeeded, but publishing failed."
Error 999999 - generic error.

Anyone managed to solve this?

Hi Aaastair,

Do you see a Service Definition in your My Contents Online?
Can you share the Service Definition with me?
Can you tell me when you tried to publish, and what your username is?

Thanks,
Andrew

@Andrew

I have exactly the same situation.

I do see the service definitions files in My Contents for each of my attempts. I can't share them however.

I tried publishing just now, January 31st 2014. user name: ti@rapidis.com

Also: If I try to publish one of the service definition files from My Contents, I get this error: "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

You can either share the data public and post or message me the Url to it, or if you want to keep it secured you could create a group to share the Service Definition to and invite me to it. (andrewstauffer)

It will be best to have the data so we can troubleshoot it internally.

Thank you,
Andrew
