Can't add labels to linear feature service - Scene Viewer

Hello, I've added point and polygon feature services into a scene and have been able to turn on and configure labels under 'Layer sytle', but noticed this toggle button didn't appear for linear layers. Has anyone figured out a work around for this? Thank you

Hello @Veronicampbell

Thanks for having reached out. Scene Viewer does not yet offer a user interface to enable and configure labels on line features.

Adding this funcitonality to Scene Viewer is in our backlog but not yet planned for a specific release. Could you please share any insights to your workflows or use cases you are trying to solve? Understanding your specific needs helps us to prioritize our backlog.

Please consider to use Map Viewer for labelling 2D lines and save the configuration to a layer item you can then load back into Scene Viewer and visualize there. Note, that this works only for 2D lines styles in 3D scenes and not all labeling style options available in 2D maps can be transposed seamlessly to 3D scenes. For many regular cases, this should be applicable as workaround.

Thanks,
Gianluca

PS: see two attached screenshots: [1] configure labels in MapViwer, [2] visualize 2d lines with labels in Scene viewer

Thank you for your response! I might try this, I think ultimately it would be convenient to add labels within SceneViewer and not need to create a separate map. I don't anticipate needing a lot of font choices or fancy labels but understand it might be more complicated to display these in a 3D map.

Hi,

I have to say "Adding this functionality to Scene Viewer is in our backlog but not yet planned for a specific release." is pretty disappointing.

ArcGIS Online was released in 2012.  That's 13 years ago. To still not have simple support for line labelling in the platform's 3d viewer is unfortunate, to not even have it planned for release is outrageous.

Surely basic functionality such as labels for standard GIS data types in your "premier" 3d gis viewer should be top of the list.

To this question: "Could you please share any insights to your workflows or use cases you are trying to solve?" - we need to be able to label 3d contours for Airport Obstacle Limitation surfaces.  I know we could generate points on the contours and label those, but that's additional layers and analysis to solve a problem that IMO shouldn't exist.

Sorry for the rant and thanks,

Marc
