The annual Esri User Conference is back!  After a short pandemic break the event is back in full form with the plenary room filled with 14,000+ GIS Enthusiasts learning, sharing and enjoying seeing old friends and meeting new ones.  If you didn’t get to join in person – you can watch the plenary online to catch up on some of the latest product and user stories.

In addition to the plenary and the several other activities of the User Conference, activities specific to the petroleum community included the energy social, user presentation sessions, the special interest PUG meeting, and more. Petroleum attendees and presenters shared their stories solving their unique business challenges inspiring their peers new ways to approach common industry workflows. Shared knowledge, networking, and the power of GIS was alive and well at the 2022 UC.

For those who could not be present at the conference, I would like to share a few petroleum industry specific highlights...

SAG AWARDS

I want to kick off with the Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) awards and offer a huge congratulations to the 2022 Petroleum recipients.  The SAG award is a great achievement and demonstrates these companies are leading the way in many areas of the field.    Learn more about each winner at the link above.

  • OMV Downstream GmbH, Austria
  • TotalEnergies, France

USER PRESENTATIONS

Thank you to all the presenters who freely shared their work and passion with the GIS community.  We had four sessions focused across Intelligent Operations, HSE/ESG, Enterprise Implementations & Technology and Innovation.  Several of these papers will be shared soon on the Esri proceedings page.

Our Intelligent Operations session included:

Data, Analytics, Visualization: The Three-Legged Maritime Domain Awareness Stool by Keith Fraley with 40Geo.  Keith Shared his vision of how GIS can provide a complete Common Operating Picture (COP) for Maritime operations by the integration data from a multitude of sources and sensors, real-time analytics driving intelligence, and dashboards providing easy and intuitive access to critical indicators.

Mobile Applications for Oil & Gas by Anne Johnson & Max Molello with Hilcorp.  Anne & Max shared several great examples around leveraging geospatial technologies and analytics to support a variety of field operations across several Hilcorp operating areas.  Sharing the need for connected and disconnected workflows they dove into how Hilcorp has addressed some of these operational business challenges.

Our HSE/ESG session included:

PermianMAP: Mapping Methane Emissions in the World’s Largest Oil Field by Barbara Patterson, Stone Environmental, Inc., Jack Warren & Katherine Roberts, Environmental Defense Fund.  Barbara. Jack and Katherine shared the goals and analytics behind the PermianMAP project.  The work included producing an ArcGIS data platform leveraging data from a variety of acquisition platforms to identify and monitor methane emissions across the Permian basin.

Mapping the Site Conservation Value for every point in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by Bruce Burwell, Saudi Aramco.  Bruce shared the data, analytics and value message behind the initiative to produce Saudi Arabia’s first conservation value map.  The efforts resulted in a robust data set that has identified high value habitat areas, possible biodiversity protection areas, and No-Go areas to help protect the diversity of the countries natural resources.

Our Enterprise GIS session included:

Empowering Midstream and Upstream Users with Mobile and Enterprise ArcGIS by Heather Stanton, Antero Resources.  Heather shared an excellent enterprise story implemented in a smaller Oil & Gas operator which is producing huge value of the organization.  She shared insights and examples of how a small team is delivering real solutions across many parts of the organization including executive management, HSSE, operations, reservoir engineering, geology, and midstream.

Compilation of Usage Metrics for ArcGIS Enterprise via Operations Dashboard by Ulf Becker, ExxonMobil.  Ulf shared the results of a recent initiative to implement usage metrics tracking for their enterprise Portal and ArcGIS Enterprise.  The talk included rationale behind the effort and a quick demo of the resulting dashboards – which in Ulf’s words are providing insights on who and how the platform is being leveraged that was previously not visible in the organization.

Our Technology & Innovation session included:

Analyzing Well Relationships and Modeling Future Well Inventory with ArcGIS Pro by Robert Hendrickson, Magnolia Oil and Gas and Richard Webb, Exprodat.  Robert & Richard shared a great user story were there was a particular analytics needed and while Magnolia could have solved it with some internal scripts they found a more effective and sustainable approach working with a partner to extend an existing solution to meet the need.  The result is a robust solution that solves the challenge, addresses many other workflows, and is now available to others in industry.

When GIS Meets AI, A Seismic Uplift Fees Validation by Marco Terrazas, TotalEnergies E&P Americas, LLC.  Marco shared a business challenge where AI & GIS together provided a solution that led to signifcant dollars saved for the organization.  Teaming TotalEnergies’ proprietary GAIA search (Geoscience Artificial Intelligence Application) with ArcGIS analytics they saw immediate benefits in Suriname and are now expanding the work across the Americas.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP – PUG MEETING

Mapping the Future of Energy SIG

Andrew Norris, NextEra Energy Resources, and current chairman of the PUG Community led the session and gave an update on PUG Steering activities including the new PUGOnline website, the upcoming Energy Atlas, a new “digital list” process and the pending PUG Steering Elections coming up in the Fall.   It was a great industry discussion where updates were shared and community priorities were explored.  Thank you all for joining in the session and don’t forget to join up on the PUG Linkedin Group and check out your local PUG Regional Chapter group as well.

INDUSTRY SOCIAL

The PUG community came together with the Pipeline, Renewables and Mining industries on the Marriot Coronado Terrace Tuesday evening. There was good food, music, and conversation all around. Best of all, it was a chance to relax, catch up with friends new and old, and continue the knowledge sharing in a more informal setting.
