I see that Maplex is now part of 10.1. Does this allow for semi-transparent labels?
Thanks

It is not possible to have transparency on dynamic labels, but you can convert to annotation then set transparency on the annotation feature layer.

Is this with an ArcView license or ArcInfo?

Thanks. That is something that I had never thought about. I was always bringing in my maps into photoshop and manually labeling things that needed transparent labels. I am glad I checked this out again.

And where exactly do you change the annotation layer's transparency?

From the annotation layer in the TOC, right-click > Properties (or double-click) > Display tab > Transparent.
It's a percentage scale where 0% is opaque and 100% is completely transparent (i.e. invisible).
