Occasionally I like to use a free ArcGIS online map service, in this case the National Geographic canvas basemap. I am using this for large wall maps that are around 36x50 and at extent of 1:20000. I am using ArcMap 10.2. I have been having two problems here.
1) The map is extremely slow to export to PDF. Sometimes it will take a half hour, and other times it can even crash.
2) The basemap is also extremely slow to load in layout view, but can speed up after the initial loading.
Does anyone have any tips to make these online basemaps perform better? There is also a good amount of other data ontop of the basemap, but that should not be the problem.
What do you mean by "out empty"?
Ohh I see. That's a odd error! I have never seen that before.
Hello Carlos,
I wanted to ask if you are still experiencing this issue? I have been working with a user that is dealing with the same exact thing. After a clean uninstall/reinstall of ArcMap, we were able to resolve the "Add Data" folder issue. Everything seemed to be back to normal, but now the error message has resurfaced. From the screenshot you posted above, it appears there might some 3rd party extensions on your toolbar. This could be your problem, although my user did not have any installed.
Hello Nicholas
I am experiencing the exact same thing. I have done an uninstall/reinstall and it did not solve the problem.
Hi all,
Did you try resetting your ArcGIS application profile?
Resetting your ArcGIS application profile
1. Close all ArcGIS Desktop applications
2 Type %APPDATA% into the Windows Explorer address bar; this will take you directly to the folder that contains the application profile folder "ESRI", regardless of Windows version and "hidden" setting.
3 you can start totally fresh by renaming the entire ESRI folder to ESRI_old. The entire ESRI folder will be recreated on the next ArcGIS Desktop app startup. (This is the approach I often use.)
