After I save my work in ArcGIS 10.6 and then reopen the same map document later, why have random files been converted to .xml files when they were previously shapefiles?

This has been happening for a few days now, and no amount of restarting has fixed the issue. I also just uninstalled and reinstalled ArcGIS because I was having issues with my parallels setup. This is for a class project, and any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Clea,  Hopefully you have your answer, but just in case, my recommendation would be to set up a case with our tech support team.  They can possibly address your technical challenge.  Visit our Technical Support page at https://support.esri.com/en/  where you can search from a library of technical articles or you can click on the blue "Contact Support" button in the menu.
