Hi everyone,
I'm looking to transition into remote or freelance GIS work and was wondering if anyone here could share advice or resources on how to get started.
✅ What platforms or websites are best for finding remote GIS jobs or freelance projects?
✅ Are there specific industries or sectors (e.g., environmental, utilities, urban planning) that offer more remote opportunities?
✅ Any tips on how to build a portfolio or position myself to stand out as a GIS freelancer?
I’m proficient in tools like ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and I'm comfortable working with spatial analysis, cartography, and data visualization.
Would love to hear from those of you already working remotely or freelancing in GIS!
Thanks in advance for your insights.

I don't do freelance so take this with a grain of salt, but networking is massively important imo. Nearby industry events, especially those with private consultants (public contracting is a PITA as a 1-person company) is what I would target personally. A lot of small to mid sized firms don't have much GIS horsepower in-house.
Getting yourself on small works rosters for counties and municipalities wouldn't be a big effort, either. Once you do it for one or two, it's usually a 15-60 minute effort to do the others (but you still need to network).
That's just the world I know, though. I'm always a little envious of the people that make maps & apps of whatever they want and find a way to make a living doing it.
