Entry-Level Remote GIS Position Recommendations

Hello! I've been graduated with my certification in GIS, a degree in geology, and a degree in a geography for some time now but finding any positions in GIS has been very difficult, since I do not have professional experience. I am disabled and cannot drive, so I have been searching for remote positions. Recently, I moved to Athens, GA to be with family, and cannot undo that situation.

Does anyone have any recommendations for positions that want GIS-certified individuals, that perhaps don't have the professional experience?

Thanks in advance!

@Admiral_N7  , I'm sorry, but I don't know of any active remote jobs off the top of my head. However, if you are able to make it down to Jekyll Island to the Georgia Geospatial Conference in September, that would be a great place to network if you have not found a position by then.

I know it's tough out there, especially for remote jobs. I wish you the best of luck. If I hear of any remote positions from my colleagues, I will forward them to you.

Good Morning Admiral, I was wondering if you were looking for paid or unpaid positions? I ask as you could look at interships in your local area to see what's available. These come in both paid and unpaid forms and could get you started  with your desire to gain experience. At the City of Longmont Colorado where I work we use interships as not only a way to have additional help with work we need additional manpower to accomplish, but as our opportunity to give back to the GIS Community, and provide out of classroom practical experience for GIS students and recent graduates to get much needed work environment experience under their belt. Saying this I would see if these options are available in your new area. You can not only contact local municipalities, but I would also engage any local GIS organizations to see if there are folks who could assist you too. I would also search outside of the traditional GIS focused job fields and include search thing related to the health industry, and so many businesses are using GIS today for things such as determining where their customer bases are. We touch every part of the city and our reach is only expanding. If you would like to chat about this I am more than happy to speak with you at your convenience. Let me know and we can get in touch. Have a great day and looking forward to speaking with you.  Eric

Hello Eric,

I am unable to move, so I can only do remote work, as in-person GIS positions are in Atlanta, where I cannot get to. I would be working full time on top of the internship, but it would need to be paid. I cannot financially sustain an unpaid internship. If you wish to talk about this more, please reach out at my email: dakemis_109@yahoo.com so that we can go into greater detail about this. I appreciate your assistance.

Be on the lookout for any 'internship' opportunities. I retired from a
utility that paid interns for summer work (sorry, it might be late for
that), and they worked remotely, too.

Check out GIS Corp for a volunteer opportunity that will give you
experience to add to your resume. Their clients are usually remote only,
too.

Best of luck,
Steve
