The Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences at Montana State University seeks a talented and enthusiastic individual who will: (1) provide leadership in the acquisition, analysis, characterization and application of remotely sensed imagery at multiple scales; (2) actively contribute to sustaining and enhancing the department’s research, teaching, and outreach programs related to remote sensing as applied to land resources and environmental sciences; and (3) contribute to the MSU Spatial Sciences Center and its mission to advance academic research and instructional programs and to participate in campus-wide synergistic collaborations.
Duties and responsibilities:
Candidates should have outstanding research and teaching experience (or potential) and fundamental training in a relevant remote sensing and quantitative analysis field as applied to agricultural, environmental, or natural resource issues. The successful candidate will complement existing departmental strengths, and be expected to develop a nationally competitive research program supported by extramural grant funds. Examples of potential research foci include ecosystem and landscape processes, environmental restoration, climate change, environmental biology, pest ecology and management, and sustainable and precision agricultural systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses that emphasize remote sensing and quantitative analysis. The successful candidate will participate in high-quality graduate and undergraduate programs, including undergraduate curricular advising, undergraduate research advising, and training and mentoring of graduate students with expectation of recruiting and funding doctoral students as a priority. The hiring department has a historically strong extramural funding ethic and enterprise for supporting graduate students. Additional service responsibilities include departmental citizenship and engagement with the community consistent with the missions of a Land-Grant University and the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station.
PhD. in an appropriate discipline.
Demonstrated advanced expertise in remote sensing approaches and technologies.
Demonstrated academic strengths in the integration and applications of remote sensing analyses within agricultural, environmental and natural resource sciences.
Publication record in peer-reviewed journals commensurate with time since terminal degree.
Demonstrated potential for excellence in undergraduate and/or graduate instruction and mentoring.
Experience with a diverse range of remotely-sensed data types, including fine-, moderate-, and coarse-scale imagery that employ both passive and active sensors.
Demonstrated or potential ability to secure extramural funding, independently and with interdisciplinary teams.
Interest in and ability to lead integrated cross-disciplinary remote sensing-based initiatives.
Ability to interact across academic disciplines and cultures, both within the university and with external constituents.
Ability to mentor a diverse student body, including women and minorities.
