What won't work if Shape field is removed?

If I don't include the Shape field in a published map service, what processes will be affected?    I recently discovered I had a working map service that wasn't able to be displayed or downloaded in Open Data because the Shape field was missing so it made me wonder what other things would be hindered by omitting the Shape field in a service?

If omitting the Shape field it should be added as a table and not features.  If geometry is missing, any reference to, or involving geometry won't be possible
