We cordially invite you to participate in an online study on interpreting geospatial data.

This study is part of a research project named “Question-based analysis of Geographic Information with semantic queries” (QuAnGIS). The project is funded by the European Research Commission (ERC) and situated at the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning, Utrecht University. The project aims at developing an automated question-answering system for GIS.

The purpose of this study is to explore how people interpret geo-spatial data for GIS-based analysis. The findings from this study will be used for developing an AI model capable of interpreting geospatial data the same way humans do.

For participating in this study, GIS expertise is not strictly required (though interest in GIS data is). For participants, it is also a nice opportunity to familiarize themselves with GIS or test their existing knowledge of GIS. For us, it is an excellent opportunity to gain insight from your GIS expertise.

For this study, we ask you to answer an online questionnaire. Only a web browser is required for opening and answering the questionnaire. The questionnaire will take approximately 30 minutes of your time depending on your level of GIS expertise.

The questionnaire consists of four parts. The first part offers an informed consent stating the conditions for participating in the study and your rights as a participant. In the second part, we ask you to provide basic information about yourself including your level of GIS expertise. The next part asks to compare multiple geo-spatial datasets visualized as maps. The final part asks to indicate whether certain ArcGIS tools are meaningfully applicable to specific geospatial datasets.

The questionnaire is hosted on Qualtrics, a secure platform maintained by Utrecht University. Any data you provide during this study will be handled in accordance with the privacy regulations of Utrecht University and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union.

If you are interested, please fill out the questionnaire that is accessible HERE

If you have any questions regarding the study, you are welcome to contact Dr. Enkhbold Nyamsuren (e.nyamsuren@uu.nl) and Eric Top (e.j.top@uu.nl).
