At the 2024 Esri Developer Summit March 12-15, I participated as a Student Assistant through Esri’s student programs. I found myself immersed in a world where the latest GIS technology advancements were discussed and showcased in real-time.

My responsibilities were diverse and engaging; not only did I assist in the registration process, but I also facilitated various sessions and supported the Esri Store. This gave me a wonderful chance to meet and greet
attendees from around the world right from the start.

Even though I had my duties as a Student Assistant, I was able to attend sessions that spanned a wide range of topics, from innovative applications of ArcGIS in urban planning to the groundbreaking use of artificial intelligence in spatial analysis. As a sophomore in college who knows little about the field, this experience of attending this summit was fruitful.

Learning About GeoAI

One of the most fascinating topics at DevSummit was GeoAI. This is where GIS meets Artificial Intelligence
(AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Presentations delved into how AI/ML revolutionized GIS, enabling predictive modeling and geospatial data analysis.

Thanks to the enthusiastic staff, I learned more about GeoAI algorithms. For example, I met a kind Esri Engineer at the Expo during my break time. He introduced me to how his team modified the weighting in different regions to increase the accuracy of the algorithm, and how they developed new features on top of popular algorithms like decision trees forest. In addition, the introduction of a smart mapping assistant prototype is immensely interesting as well. This is a large luggage model with a few more GIS-specific layers.

Other applications and features for products like ArcPy and JavaScript SDK are amazing too. As a student assistant, I had the fortunate opportunity to speak to many industry experts on the Expo floor, socials, and sessions. I talked to many developers and I learned a lot about their creative applications of Esri’s products in their projects. For instance, one developer shared insights into utilizing ArcGIS Pro for floor plans and planning during emergencies. These all showcase the software's versatility.

Broadening My Horizons

Hearing firsthand accounts from developers and engineers in the industry not only broadened my horizons but also connected me to the GIS community. Dev Summit was not just a learning experience but an inspiration, showing me the endless possibilities of what can be achieved with GIS technology. Being a part of this event has had a profound impact on my studies and career trajectory as well, sparking a newfound passion for GIS technology that I am eager to pursue further.

Having gone through the experience of attending Dev Summit as a student assistant, my advice for other students is to seize every opportunity to learn. Dive into every session, and don't be shy to engage in conversations, even during lunch with someone you've just met. Keep an open mind and ask questions, no matter how basic. This approach will transform every interaction into a learning opportunity, enriching your experience and expanding your understanding of GIS.
