GIS goes beyond outdoor mapping!
Did you know there is a whole world of GIS that maps indoor environments?
With Indoor GIS, you can create, manage, analyze, and map indoor data. Some great use cases for this include (but are not limited to) digital floor plans, indoor space management, locating folks, and maximizing resources. ArcGIS Indoors is your ArcGIS tool for indoor mapping.
Why should you utilize indoor mapping?
- Enhanced Operational Efficiency

Indoor GIS improves efficiency through a unified view of facility operations. Leaders have the ability to make data-driven decisions about space management, asset tracking, and maintenance. This can reduce overhead costs and improved productivity.
- Improved Space Utilization
With tools for space planning and management, Indoor GIS helps organizations maximize the use of indoor spaces. This can include reclaiming unused areas, predicting future needs, and adapting to changing occupant trends.
- Real-Time Navigation and Situational Awareness
You can have real-time navigation and situational awareness, allowing for efficient navigation of facilities. This enhances both the employee and customer experience and can support more intentional operations.
If any of this piques your interest, there is great news for you—Esri Academy's new instructor-led course is all about Indoor GIS and ArcGIS Indoors!
Introduction to Indoor Mapping Using ArcGIS Indoors
You will learn key workflows to deploy ArcGIS Indoors. This course is taught by one of Esri's expert instructors.
Over two days, you will get guided practice with tools and workflows used to integrate CAD, BIM, LAS, and GIS data and create floor-aware data and layers to support indoor navigation.
After taking this course, you should be able to:
Import georeferenced CAD and BIM floor plan data or LAS data into an ArcGIS Indoors geodatabase.
Build a routable indoor network that supports wayfinding using ArcGIS Indoors apps.
Create floor-aware maps and 3D scenes.
