Added a tif file, white paper/background with black writing.

Suddenly, now when view is zoomed out to a little bit lower scale, the colors of the imported tif are inverted as a negative, with white writing on a black background.

Where is the control to stop this from happening?

Am stacked up and in a rush to meet various deadlines. So if I don't review, test and respond really soon, it's not a snub. It just may take me a day or two to check it all out and reply.

Billy,

Ok. I will go ahead and resolve the incident. If you have any more questions then reply to the incident and we can discuss it further there.

Hi Jeff, Patrick,

Back again,  your solution for getting the images to display properly works a treat, however I have to pre pyramid all 1 bit packbits discrete data, which is not difficult as we know but just slightly annoying.   I tried your suggestion and changed the AdvancedArcMapSettings.exe Raster defaults to Bilinear, but this appears only to work with continuous data and not discrete as in my case. I have changed my Enviornment settings on the toolbox etc.  but this only works in the enviroment settings of a tool/script etc... not the default mecnahism or ArcMap.  So adding am image to ArcMap without pre built pyramids still wont display properly .... where as building the pyrmids with the toolbox works perfectly.

any further suggestions are appreciated..

Otherwise you can change the environment settings in ArcToolbox to reflect the selection of Bilinear for all pyramid operations.  Be sure to save the Environment Setting Choices to your template or the selection will only apply to that particular map document.[/QUOTE wrote:

It would be nice if you could tell us which part of the ArcToolbox haystack to look in to find the environmental settings so that those of us who work late nights and weekends while tech support is closed and who don't know ArcMap inside and out don't have to spend two hours pullingour hair out looking for it, only not to find it.

If you open the AdvancedArcMapsettings.exe under /Program Files/ArcGIS/Utilities, then you can adjust the default option when you build pyramids when rasters are added to ArcMap.  Select the Raster tab and then the default resampling mode.

For those of us who don't know ArcMap inside and out and who work nights and weekends while tech support is closed, it would be so much less frustrating and hair pulling if you could add just one little sentence to tell us where in the ArcToolbox haystack we could find the little environment settings needle.

Billy,

To find out the requested information, right click on the raster and select properties.  You will see Pixel Depth listed, which will tell you if its 1 bit, 8 bit, etc.  While you are checking that, please check and see what kind of compression you have.

Paul,

If you look in Windows Explorer does your raster have .rrd or .ovr file?  If a .rrd file, try renaming it, and then build pyramids, and see if that changes the display as you zoom in.

Patrick

For anyone new to ArcMap who has this same problem and finds this post in the future, what he means is to right-click the name of the raster image in the Table Of Contents window in ArcMap after you have added the raster to ArcMap. He does not mean to right-click the raster file where it is stored in a folder on your computer.

Use the Build Pyramids tool and then adjust the Environment Settings in the tool.  Under Raster Storage, select Bilinear for the pyramid resampling technique.  This should correct the display after the tool is run.

Billy,

I have sent you the same response with the incident. Please let me know if you have received the message and if you have any further questions.

For new users, open ArcToolBox by clicking on the little red toolbox icon on the toolbar.

In ArcToolBox, go down to Raster and click to expand it.

In Raster, go down to Raster Properties and click to expand it.

You'll see the Build Pyramids tool there.
