Hi, all,

With ArcGIS 10, is there any efficient way to drape satellite images onto a DEM (or ??shaded relief??), for example, in Mosaic Dataset?

With Mosaic Dataset in 10, it initially shows a little promising 3D analysis capabilities, including being able to very effectively create the ??shaded relief?? image from DEM.

I am wondering if the ??draping?? capability is available, which can be used into the function chain, in order efficiently to get massive images draped onto larger DEM. After published as image service, we can see the following 3D outcome in Google Earth or ArcGIS Explorer (see the attached snapshots).

You cannot drape imagery onto a DEM within a mosaic dataset.  The draping process is a 3D function which does not apply to the mosaic dataset functions.  The Shaded Relief function does not make the raster 3D but applies symbology to give the visual effect of it being 3D.

What are the raster or mosaic dataset functions?

You can take the elevation mosaic dataset into ArcGlobe and then effectively drape the imagery.

Thanks, Tim

With 3D processes & visualization, ESRI gives us too many products (3D Analyst, ArcGlobe, ArcScene ?). Hopefully, they can unify those functions and tools in the future.

In fact, even in mosaic dataset, ESRI already gives us some good 3D/spatial analysis functions like Hillshade, Slope, Aspect. I really hope, ESRI have  a good plan gradually to add more and more 3D /spatial analysis & visualization functions into mosaic dataset.

Anyhow, do you have any advices on how to use ??draped?? 3D function or visual effect in 3D for imagery within web applications & ArcGIS Explorer?

In other word, if we plan to use image services from mosaic datasets (including DEM image service, 'Hillshaded' and ??shaded relief?? image service) in web & ArcGIS Explorer, what should we do, in order to get  ??draped image?? 3D process or visual effect in 3D?

Another thing you might try is to create an ArcGlobe document and drape the imagery over the elevation data.  Then save and published the ArcGlobe document as a globe service.
