ABSTRACT: "The protections for Traditional Knowledges (TK) and recognition of intellectual property remain the most pressing concerns for tribal communities partnering with non-tribal entities on climate change, conservation, and natural resource management. In 2014, the 3rd National Climate Assessment issued a chapter, “Guidelines for Considering Traditional Knowledges in Climate Change Initiatives” for those working with tribes or using TK. In this session, we will discuss the eight guidelines and Principles for Engagement provided by the text, to have a conversation about protections of TK in GIS and technology. As the field of conservation GIS increases consideration of TK, the need for guidelines considering TK in GIS becomes critically important. This will be an interactive, discussion-based space for those who are working to protect their communities’ TK, and those whose responsibility it is to protect them, to begin developing shared principles."
