South Africa Advanced Conservation GIS Training, Cape Town, 2014  xHistory xTTT

Juniper GIS Background Description: "GIS Training in South Africa, October/November 2014 Working with ArcGIS for Environmental Analysis & Advanced Topics for ArcGIS Juniper GIS is partnering with the South African National Biodiversity Institute and other conservation groups to offer training in ESRI’s ArcGIS software in South Africa this coming October/November. We will offer the one week ArcGIS for Environmental Analysis at the Southern Africa Wildlife College (SAWC) near Kruger National Park October 20-24. We will also teach that class in Cape Town November 10-14, and then teach the one-week Advanced Topics for ArcGIS class in Cape Town November 17-21. See class descriptions below. The classes will be presented by Juniper GIS and taught by John Schaeffer, who has over twenty years experience teaching and using ArcGIS, with an emphasis on conservation GIS. John has taught extensively in the US, and also in Fiji, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Russia and Mexico to a wide variety of state, local and federal agencies and many conservation groups, including the Jane Goodall Institute and the Society for Conservation GIS.

Cape Town Courses – ArcGIS for Environmental Analysis November 10-14 and Advanced Topics for ArcGIS, November 17-21 The classes at Cape Town will be at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, which lies in the heart of the Cape Floristic Region, also known as the Cape Floral Kingdom. In 2004 the Cape Floristic Region, including Kirstenbosch, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage. It is the first botanic garden in the world to be included within a natural World Heritage Site. "

Dates:  TTT Training - ArcGIS for Environmental Analysis November 10-14 and Advanced Topics for ArcGIS, November 17-21 at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town. There were 18 students in the first class and 14 in the second week. Most were from the South Africa National Biodiversity Institute, but there several from other environmental groups, plus a student from Nigeria and one from Tanzania. TTT Trainees Certified:  Debbie Jewitt, a 2012 Scholar from South Africa,  and Fahiema Daniels, a 2013 Scholar also from South Africa. Fahiema was the primary organizer, but she was only able to attend about ½ the classes so she was given a Juniper Trainer certificate limited to only the ArcGIS for Environmental Analysis class.  (Photo Above: Debbie Jewitt (L) and Fahiema Daniels (R) receive their TTT Certificates)

Other Presentations:    We brought Dr. Mervyn Lotter to Cape Town to do a demonstration on ArcGIS Online for both classes.

ArcGIS for Environmental Analysis  was taught at the Southern Africa Wildlife College (SAWC) near Kruger National Park October 20-24. Dr. Mervyn Lotter was the assistant instructor on this course

Funding:  Most of my expenses were covered by revenue generated by selling seats to the class. Funding for the TTT activities, including bringing Mervyn to Cape Town, was $4,305, with the funding coming from the money Esri  donated for TTT program support.

CONNECTIONS:  Rosena (Pictured Below)  took a class from John Schaeffer in Kenya in 2007. That Kenya class was 2 days and organized by Lucy Waruingi as part of the first SCGIS Kenya conference. Besides Rosena, I have had 2-3 other students in that class take courses from me in the following years, including at UC James Reserve and Davis.
