I have created a text field in ArcCatalog for the purpose of tech being able to enter field observations.  They can enter thier sentence but it can't be saved.  Is anyone having this problem?  Is there a work around?

Hello!

I think you may need to provide a bit more detail for us to get to the bottom of your issue!!

Eg. Can you save edits to your data in ArcMap? Are you using shapefiles or an AXF? Is it only your text field that is unable to save edits, or all fields?

Looking forward to helping you figure this one out!!

Hola Kyle,

I would have to agree with Hannah above, we would need a bit more information to be able to properly assist you with this question. I am though including a screen shot of the attribute table, reflecting the properties of the ??Comments? field for your review of Riverside.mxd. In reviewing this mxd, hopefully this will assist you in setting up your field within ArcMap in the same manner, and this will reflect within ArcPad. Gracias, Kyle!

Thanks Guys
I can save all edits in ArcMap10.  My field is setup just like the screen shot.  I am using the ArcPad tools to check out data for field use, which creates the AXF file.  I am using a combination of gdb's and shapefile the shapefiles are read only and the gdb is for editing.  All other fields save fine and they are domain (drop down) types of fields but the comments field which is a simple text/string field will not allow population in ArcPad.  You can enter the sentence but it will not retain it.  Also, the edits to the comments field entered in ArcMap do not show up when viewed in the field using ArcPad.  I have in the past been able to provide this field for my field people but that was using ArcMap 9.3 and a personal gdp.  Using 10 and a file gdb I have not been able to make it work.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hola Kyle,

What happens if you only add the editable feature class(s) where this issue is occurring into a new mxd. Then save the map and check it out for Disconnect Editing and making your axf and apm from within ArcMap. Then testing with this and seeing if you are still encountering the same issues. Gracias, Kyle!

Hola Kyle,

Are you able to upload a small sample dataset, I can then test for you if you would like. I can then review your data, and then I can make some suggestions for you. If you would prefer to log a support webform with us, being current with your maintenance, I would be happy to work with you too. Gracias, Kyle!

The text field you created has more than 255 characters and ArcPad will not recognize this field when you check it out.  Recreate the field, then check it back out and it should be good to go.  I experienced the same problem and resorted to creating 2 text fields to accommodate the field users needs.

Hola Kyle,

I would agree with Joseph on his suggestion, since I reviewed your attachment again. You created a field with 1000 in length, which within my Riverside Poles attachment. It had a length of 250 characters, and yes I would also break it into 4 fields for comments if you need fields totaling this in length. Gracias, Gentlemen!
