So... can a handheld (Trimble Juno SB for instance) running ArcPad 7, properly communicate and interact with with a desktop running ArcGIS v10sp1 and ArcPad v10sp1 (desktop)? These are either Windows 7/64 or XP/32 systems, if you need to know.

Situation:  We have a data collection application designed and used on AP v7 and it hasn't been updated (much) and it doesn't work quite right with APv10.  However the desktops are migrating to ArcDesktop v10 with ArcPad v10, since ArcPad v7 doesn't like ArcDesktop v10 much.

Can the handhelds remain using APv7, while the desktops move to APv10?

Thank you for your input and comments.

Best regards.

ArcPad itself is a standalone product, there??s no ??compatibility?? needed between it and ArcMap. The only component that is related to ArcMap is the ArcPad Data Manager, and only the ArcPad 10 Data Manager will install correctly with ArcGIS 10. If you are not working within ArcMap 10 and ArcPad 10, when using the ArcPad Data Manager you will not be able to take advantage of its functionalities when using an older version of ArcPad.

Yes, you should be able to consume axf or shapefiles created with ArcPad 10 on the desktop within ArcPad 7.1.1.  I've run across a few strange quirks occasionally, but have found that many customers have success with this workflow.

Works very well in my experience.  Our organization uses this combination of software every day as our older Trimble GeoXM 2005 series and 2008 series units simply cannot run ArcPad 10 with any degree of reliability or acceptable performance, whereas on the desktop the features of ArcPad 10 are definitely preferred.
