Where to put the full titles for abbreviations in the map layout?

Hi everyone, this is a quick question regarding abbreviations in the map layout. If I have abbreviations for some labels, where should their full titles fit? Should they be included in the Legend? 

For example: If I label all airports with their name and then abbreviate airport to AP at all locations, where can I make this clear in the map, if at all?

This is a matter of personal preference. Personally, I would place it in the legend as "AP (Airport)"

If the resulting legend becomes too big, I would add a notes text item such as "Notes: AP = Airport" and any other abbreviations you need to explain.
