I would like to make my app appear as a stand alone app, and not have to access it strictly through a browser. Is this possible? If so how? I would appreciate any resources I could read on the topic.

I don't have any resources to point you to. I don't believe you will find a document/resource that says this is not possible because the simple fact is that WAB is built using the JS API and the JS API is a browser dependent API. So bottom line is no. Your main standalone option is ArcGIS Engine or ArcGIS Runtime but those are discussions for different geoNet spaces.
