Change the screen background color - v 2.1

I want to change the background color of the screen (not the map).  This means that any blank area not filled by map, header bar or other should be this background color.

I have seen some ideas for v1.3 but not for 2.1. 

Any help is greatly appreciated.

One thing though... if you make a dark background it can change your other colors if you don't edit the alpha parameter.
