Hi all. I'm looking for advice on the utilization of containment in order for my organization to display our electric data as a "one-line diagram". For those unfamiliar with the concept of a one-line, also called single-line, diagram, here is this link. I am not an electrical engineer, but it is basically a simplified view of the electrical system, example below.

Does anyone use Esri's utility network to display their one line diagrams? Do you accomplish this using containment associations?

If it is pertinent, my organization is a university and we are considering maintaining a separate GIS layer for the one-line diagram. I do not want to do this because it would mean editing data in 2 places.

Any advice is appreciated.

This is something you would achieve using a network diagram with a custom diagram templates that would trace your entire network and simplify it down to just the elements you need to see. You can learn more about network diagrams, custom diagram templates, and the rules you would use to achieve this in this learning path: https://learn.arcgis.com/en/paths/learn-network-diagrams/
