Survey123Connect hangs on 'updating survey form package'

Hi all,

I made a minor tweak to a published survey created using Survey123Connect (adding a value to an external choice list used in a select_one question, stored in the media folder). When attempting to republish I am told that this will not affect the survey data, but publishing then hangs on 'updating form package'.

The change to the choice list may be a red herring, as reverting to the existing list and republishing a completely unchanged survey fails in the same way.

I have tried removing the local folder for this survey and forcing Survey123Connect to redownload this, which works fine, but then attempting to republish this (without making any changes) fails in exactly the same way.

I can find a previous forum page suggesting this can be caused by moving files around in AGOL, but I have not (knowingly) moved anything.

There are no error messages, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to diagnose the problem - has anyone had a similar issue in the past or can make any suggestions? I don't want to recreate the survey to make the minor tweak, as I don't want to lose the existing collected data.

Thanks a lot!

Is it isolated to this one survey?

Can you create a brand new survey and publish it, or does that also get stuck?

Other surveys are publishing correctly, and I can make changes to other surveys and republish. Creating a brand new survey works, but I don't want to recreate this one from scratch because I want to keep using it and its existing data.

This problem has happened in the past on other surveys (they suddenly start hanging at 'updating form package') and I'm frustrated by not being able to find the cause!

That is strange. I've only seen hangups like that caused by either poor internet connection, or transient errors (and in those cases, pressing publish 1-2 more times usually does the trick).

Is this a particularly "large" survey? And by "large", I mean does it A) have a large number of repeats, or B) have a large number of attachments in the Media folder. I have one super large survey that sometimes gets stuck publishing, and requires 1-2 re-attempts in the off hours.

Hello @RayKidd

Prior to publishing the survey can you enable diagnostic logging then attempt to republish the survey. Please feel free to create a ticket with Esri Technical Support to pass along the diagnostic log.

Like Alex notes the main thing to look for in the diagnostic log is network related messages 4XX or 5XX errors would be most likely the error.

Thank you,
Zach
