Hi all,
I'm experiencing a consistent crash when attempting to take photos in Survey123 version 3.24.21 on an iPhone 17 Pro Max. I’ve done extensive testing across multiple devices and OS versions, and the issue appears to be specific to this hardware.
When I try to capture a photo using the camera inside Survey123, the app crashes immediately.
This happens before the camera fully loads.
The crash is repeatable across multiple surveys.
| iPhone 16 Pro Max | 26.0 (Beta) | 3.24.21 | ✅Works |
| iPad Mini (A17 Pro, MYHC3LL/A) | 18.6 (22G86) | 3.23.36 / 3.24.21 | ✅Works |
| iPad Mini (same) | 18.7 (22H20) | 3.24.21 | ✅Works |
| iPad Mini (same) | iPadOS 26.0 (23A341) | 3.24.21 | ✅Works |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max (MFXQ4LL/A) | 26.0 (23A345) | 3.24.21 | ❌Crashes on camera launch |
Attaching a photo from the library works fine — only in-app camera capture causes the crash.
Happens even in very simple surveys (e.g., one image question, no repeats or logic) and complex ones.
Appears to be hardware-specific (iPhone 17 Pro Max) rather than OS-specific.
Has this issue been reported by other iPhone 17 Pro Max users?
Is Esri aware of compatibility problems with iOS 26.0 or the new camera hardware?
Hi Everyone
We have found that upgrading to iOS 26.1 Beta 3 resolves the issue for the iPhone 17 Pro Max (the crash no longer occurs when taking a photo). This means that the fix will be dependent on the release of iOS 26.1.
In the mean time see: https://beta.apple.com/ if you are willing/able to test the iOS beta.
Thanks
John
Hi Everyone,
We are planning to release a hotfix that should address the camera crash issue for iPhone 17 Pro users. We have shared the test build on the Early Adopter Community: Link here . The build number is 3.25.11.
Please test it out and let us know if this works for you.
Thank you.
