Can survey 123 be used along with Roads and Highways. For instance a linear Referencing Feature Event?

Hi Preston.  I am no expert on the Roads and Highways product, but I can see some initial connection points:

  • With Survey123 you can create smart forms to capture data along a linear feature such as road. You can for example create a form where field users will define the name of the road they an in, as well as the mile marker.  Both of these attributes can be used later to put the event back in a map using a linear reference system.  There is no need to include a map in the smart form since Survey123 can work against the event standalone tables directly.
  • You can also configure forms to load from your existing feature  services, events along roads. This includes events with SHAPE or events without a SHAPE.  This would for example allow you to visit existing assets along a road, look at their  properties using a smart form and even update that information.

The type of things you will not be able to do are:

  • You cannot define the location of an event based on a road-name plus mile marker an expect that Survey123 will automatically populate the XY coordinates in the SHAPE field.  You will need to do this in the back-office.
  • If you include a map in your form, you cannot center the map at a location using a road name plus mile marker. The map can only be centered using your device's  location, or manually.
  • You cannot expect Survey123 to render events in the map through a linear referencing system. If you would like to use a map in Survey123 to open for example the form for a specific asset in the map, you need to provide the lat/lon of the event in advance (through a SHAPE field)
  • You cannot use Survey123 to edit linear features. For example, you cannot edit the geometry or Ms of an existing road.
