How to calculate the height of a specified (by feature) area

First
I have a raster with heights and a shape-file with polygon-features representing areas.
For each area I would like to know the average height.

Second
What I really would like is that I add a field with a height to each polygon and that ArcGIS calculates the difference in height with the raster for that specific area. More difficult to explain 🙂

Finding a solution for the first step would be great.

Meanwhile, I am also thinking and searching.:)
A possible solution is to convert the shape layer with the features to a raster.
Second start to compare both rasters.

I still hope to find an easier method.

I have the same issue, i have a lidar based height model for the canopy for a forests, primary height information is what i'm interested in.

I also have a polygon shape file divided by species, establishment date and its also divided into a gridded pattern (1hectars), my goal is to sample the average height for all lidar cells which falls 50%or more under each polygon and add it to the shape file table.

So far I've only been able to sample on a single or multiple point locations, not for areas, is there a tool which allows the average height to be sampled from an polygon (area)

Greetings,

See Zonal Statistics as Table.  You can use this tool to get the mean value per zone (polygon).
