Why can't I edit the text I've placed on a layout?

I have a map that has been worked with and updated (bicycle infrastructure) for the last 3 years. Recently,i have added text to this map, but it isn't showing up in my contents pane (I have tried searching for it too). I can move the basemap and the text that has been added is locked to the layout. I can't move the text, delete it, edit it, or access it's features at all, but I can select it.
