Want more detail on street labeling

I am exploring ArcGIS on 21-day trial, and trying to get all of the streets labeled. Do I need to increase the size of the map to get more detail, or is there limitation for trial account? My map is of Anna Maria Island in Florida, and sizing the map to approximate print size (tabloid) is only giving me major streets.

Hi James,

That is dependent on what data you're using, or if you're relying on a basemap for labelling.

Assuming that you've added data to your map from a layer file (pre-formatted shortcut to data, covering symbology and labelling, etc), it may be that whoever set up the file just decided to only label major streets.

In which case, it's easy to add a new label class to cover those missing streets.

SQL Clause for the label class I already have

Create a new label class

Make the appropriate SQL clause

Alternatively, it may be that whoever set up the layer just made the minor streets' labels scale dependant, which you can also change pretty easily

It's also possible that the label class may be drawing from a field where those streets don't have any data. Can't get information from the Name field if it's empty in that record, for example.

If you're using a basemap's labels, you're kinda out of luck; that's decided by whoever made it and you can't edit it.

Esri has a good set of roads data you can add from ArcGIS online: https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=f42ecc08a3634182b8678514af35fac3

But it isn't formatted, so you'll have to symbolize and label yourself.

Thanks for your reply! I am using primarily basemaps "Topography," "Streets," "Open Streets" and "Navigation." All the basemaps appear to have label data for streets because the labels appear when choosing a high level of detail (like Level 16). However, the app won't complete the process of creating an Adobe Illustrator file (I am using the ESRI Adobe Creative Cloud plugin) and times out when I choose a higher level of detail for the entire Anna Maria Island area. My workaround has been to make detailed sections of small areas that I can piece together in Illustrator. I want to mention that my computer is hardwire connected to strong internet connection, so it's not a transfer of data that is timing me out. Is the map build process limited when I am on a 21-day trial? Thanks again for responding.

Okay, yeah this is a basemap issue.

The scale visibility is baked into each basemap and there isn't anything you can do to change that, unfortunately.

I don't think any of the problems you're having are a licensing thing; I think it's just a data or hardware thing.

I think the AIX thing sounds like your canvas being too big.

I'd give that data I linked above a shot and see what happens.
