Trouble publishing tile layer of georeferenced images due to unknown spatial reference

I am having trouble publishing a tile layer to AGOL due to missing spatial reference information on the georeferenced TIFFs I am tiling. When the georeferenced images are brought into a map, they appear in their georeferenced state (as in they all align as expected) but they are in the wrong spatial location (out in the ocean or in the middle of the continent). Sometimes, when they are pulled into a map with other data that matches the correct system (Michigan State Plane Central) they will appear in the correct location. Nothing will change the spatial reference, it remains at unknown. I have working knowledge of georeferencing but this is beyond me! The files were georeferenced by an outside source and then returned to me, so I do not know the exact process used to georeference.

Edit: what I mean by this is the tiff has the related .tfw file, no other related files. When in the map with the map set to the expected coordinate system, the images are in the correct place. In the properties however, there is no listed spatial reference. Define Projection does nothing. When trying to publish this as a tile layer, the job will complete with caching errors. How can I remedy this without re-georeferencing all files?
