"Failed to open map view"

Hello users,

Today I opened up my project which I have spent around 40 hours on so far, and only my layouts were visible, but with no map data. My map was missing, but visible in the catalog pane. When I try to open the map from the catalog, I get the "Failed to open map view" error with no further explanation.

Other posts mentioned the Reclassify tool as a potential culprit. I used this tool a few times, but not recently so I am not sure what caused this issue.

Is there any way that I can extract the layers and data from the map and paste it to a fresh project?

Any help is appreciated.

@ElizabethZizzamia1, Esri support may be able to recover the map. I have seen several cases where they have recovered it, so you should give it a try...

The problem persisted in ArcPro 3.2.2, and  3.3. I've not found a way to prevent this issue.

<edit>.... My students and I experience it most when we're utilizing and creating Rasters (Slope/Aspect/Hillshade etc.). Other than that, we have no clue.

I remind them to save early and often!

Any word on this?

I'm sorry that this happened. I've had this "failed to open map view" error happen many times. It has fundamentally shifted how I use ArcGIS Pro. I now save every component of the map individually, including layer symbology, layouts, label style, maps, etc. I see comments and posts about this going back to at least 2019, and Esri has yet to offer a real solution. At this point I'd prefer that Esri just admit that they don't know why it happens, and offer a checklist of steps to take for each project to prevent the loss of work due to this error.

I am experiencing this now. This is really bad, and it looks like it has been happening for years.

I have also experienced this issue this week, after using the "Reclassify" tool. I will try to follow the troubleshooting steps laid out by other posters.
