Is it possible to trace the lines in a vector PDF?

Asking for a friend (literally... a colleague asked me this yesterday and I had no idea): does Pro have a tool or workflow that allows users to easily trace lines in a vector PDF? She said it is easily accomplished in Trimble software.

I'm not talking about feature extraction... just tracing similar to how we can trace line and polygon features using the trace tool.

Thanks!

If it is a vector PDF, you can add it directly to your map and use the same trace tools you mentioned, you would just need a target feature class to hold the traces.  If it is not a vector pdf, you can convert to a tiff, georefence the image and then trace the shapes.

@Neal_t_k So if it's a vector PDF, the trace tool can snap to the lines in the PDF as if it were a feature class?

It appears when you bring the pdf in it flattens everything to a raster...no snapping.

I know you said not feature extraction but are two new tools coming in ArcGIS Pro 3.7 that will do this workflow.  See Raster to polyline extraction - Esri Community for details.

Yes, I went to a session about those at the Dev Summit. They look cool but in this case I just want to be able to snap to the lines in the vector PDF. Thanks!
