When I create a layout and then insert my layers, the headings option in the legend item properties is always greyed out. Meaning I can't turn headings off or on. This only happens for the newly added layers, the layers that were present on the map from before work just fine. In order to access the legend item properties and headings option, I click on a layer under the legend (which is unlocked), right click on the layer and select properties, so I know I'm not selecting a group of layers. I even tried to cerate new layers in order to avoid any potential layer corruption, the same result.

I have two different ESRI accounts and ArcPRO on two computers, one account is personal single use license the other is an organizational license. I have ArcPRO 3.4.3 on my personal computer and 3.4.0 on my work computer.

I tried both computers and both accounts. I tried using new and old layouts and adding layers to them. I tried using my old projects as well as creating new projects and layouts. I tried layers from various sources in case the layers were corrupted, I always get the same result. The headings option is greyed out. The interesting thing is that the same layer previously inserted in an old project doesn't have the headings grayed out but if I insert the same layer in new or existing projects now it does have the headings greyed out.

Since I tried the variety of computers, accounts and systems and I only started experiencing this issue yesterday I truly don't know what else to do.

I rely on layouts for my work constantly so having such an issue is debilitating. I would appreciate any kind of assistance.

Thank you for your help.

Katarina

According to AI (I haven’t verified), in ArcGIS Pro, the following symbology types can have headings in the legend: Unique Values, Graduated Colors, Graduated Symbols, and Proportional Symbols.

When you add a feature class to a Map it defaults to using Single Symbol symbology that does not support Headers in Legends, hence would be greyed out. Applying one of the symbology types mentioned above should activate Headings.

When using Single Symbol symbology you can enter Label and/or Description text in the Symbology pane that sort of substitutes for a Heading. These will appear in the Legend element and can be toggled on or off.

To expand on what @BarryNorthey  said, the Headings option is designed to be greyed out if there are no headings in the symbology. Can you confirm your newly added layers have headings? It might be defaulting to symbology that does not.
