ArcGIS pro freezes every time I add a legend from imported MXD map

Hi - i have imported an MXD into arcmap.  It works fine and appears in a layout.

When i try to add a legend the item appears on the map (but with no layers in it). I can pan round the map but the drawing icon appears and everything else is frozen.   I can close the layout but everything is grayed out.

Any ideas?  IS it due to the content of the map?

try to rebuild from the original data and see if that works first

Hi Dan - just copied all the layers onto another map and it worked ok.  Must have had an issue with the imported map.
