I have a project with 10 maps and 7 layouts. Everything was going fine until I tried to open it today. I am getting a spinning blue circle. I let the opening process continue for a half hour and no progress. I started ArcGIS Monitor and it shows the process. Attached is an image of the ArcGIS Monitor. I have to admitted that I am not very familiar with the methods. Maybe someone can help get this project to open. If I don't have to recreate it, this would be awesome!

Just to update on what I have noticed recently. Last night, I decided to start a new Arc Pro project. I created a connection to one of the SDE databases in catalog that I want to use data from. When I tried to expand and add the layer, Arc Pro hung up with a blue spinning circle. What is interesting is that in Arc Desktop, I didn't have an issue with accessing that same layer from the same SDE. At which point, I decided to call it a day. This morning, I tired to open the project and it opened. So, maybe the project was having an issue with accessing the data? Maybe? If it happens again, I will try Robert's solution to see if this is a work around. Thank you for your responses!
What kind of database does your SDE data reside in (e.g. SQL Server, Oracle, other)?
Is there any chance your database was down for backup last night when you were trying to access the SDE database in Pro?
Did it work? Just curious - thx!
Hi Robert, It has been consistently working now. Thank you for asking. I am not exactly sure what the issue is but I am so glad that I didn't have to recreate it. Hopefully this issue doesn't reappear.
Hi Michael - The SDE resides in a SQL Server database. There is a possibility that it was down, I not sure.
Using ArcMap for years, and it is very slow to open from scratch, so when I'm done with a file/map document, whatever, I will save it, then click create new map document, and that way the interface is sitting there ready to open a map when I am.
I keep making the mistake of thinking this new software will be slow, so when I'm done with my work, I'll save the "whatever you call them now', and close the map, leaving the program running, but no map sitting there. Now I'm just a regular guy, so I suppose there's no way this could possibly do any harm, but once I've done this, the map will never open again. Either from within this new software, or by clicking on the actual aprx file. I just see, "opening project", then nothing.
I tried Robert Eclair's suggestion regarding the files in ~/AppData, but it did no good.
Seems odd that one can ruin a map this easily.
Thank God we still keep ArcMap where we can use it.
And yes, this new software will open the other maps just fine, it's just the one that I need to present to the Commissioners at lunch today that I can't open.
Which is why I recreated it yesterday in ArcMap.
I'm trying to use the new software, and am learning all the time, and I really like the speed, but I'm glad we, "kept the old mule for when the Tesla acts up".
Bill - question for you. You mentioned you close the Map View but keep the AGP application open, correct? If so, then the *.aprx file is still open. Closing a Map View does not close the AGP project file (*.aprx). You can navigate to the Catalog Pane, go to Map, and double-click the map to open. Now if you fully close the AGP application, then then the project is closed. You can reopen it by double clicking the *.aprx in a MS File Explorer or open an existing project in AGP. Any insight to your workflow would be helpful.
Spot on, thank you.
Great to hear Bill! If you feel my response is the correct response, please mark it as CORRECT. That way this thread is closed out. Thx!
Begging your pardon, and not to sound like I do not like the new arc version in the least, but it appears as though whomever created this web page had a devious hand in hiding useful tools in the new arc version also.
I see no place where one could mark anything here as CORRECT.
That said, though, I agree that the issue I had was corrected by the advise Robert LeClair gave to me.
