My organization has several very large datasets (1M+ records per dataset) that have a spatial component. Mostly this has been used a business data, but there is a push by management to incorporate more geospatial analysis. Because of the large datasets, data is stored using HP Vertica system. This is not a database system I am familiar with, but I do know that it uses a column based format rather than a row based (like most databases I've worked with).
My questions are: has anyone had success in connecting Vertica to ArcGIS? I know Vertica supports ODBC and JDBC connectors, but that seems to require some custom programming which is not my field of expertise. Has anyone gone through that process of creating one? Any hints on documentation or pitfalls I should look out for?
Any advice, guidance, or lessons learned would be appreciated. At this point, I'm not even sure connecting the two directly is possible without going through some sort of intermediary step.

Susan Gidley, I connected through ArcMap ODBC connection. ArcGIS Pro doesn't have this functionality yet. I made an ArcGIS idea for it since we use Vertica:
