Similar to this idea, but for editing: use the shift key to restrain movement of features or feature vertices to perpendicular, parallel, 45, and possibly other angles. Right now, when editing vertices, I have no way to move them in a straight line down. This is a standard feature in virtually every other application that involves graphical elements.

A 'smart guide' for continuing the line might also be a solution. I poked around down here but couldn't find anything that did what I wanted.

Best workaround I've found is described here: Turn the reference grid on—ArcGIS Pro | Documentation - snap the grid origin to your point. But then you have to move your grid every single time you want to move a vertex, and it takes absolutely forever for the green check/confirm button to light up after specifying the location.

Hm, but that workaround results in a ghost of your feature's old location being left behind, even when turned off...
