ArcGIS is capable of converting Colormap rasters to RGB rasters.  Why not the other way around?  This would be helpful in reducing storage requirements by reducing bands from 3 to 1.  It would also make it easier to manipulate the display by editing the clr file since there isn’t a raster editing environment.

That could save disk space ...I inherited a 3 byte/cell RGB topo that could be a single band 0.5 byte/cell  raster with values 0 through 12 in colormap.

Hi @IlyasMohamed ,

ArcGIS Desktop is in mature support and will be retired March 1, 2026 so we won’t be considering this idea. We recommend that you migrate to ArcGIS Pro, our fully supported desktop GIS application.

Thank you for taking the time to share your ideas. We truly appreciate your contributions to continuously improving the software to help you do your work and look forward to what ideas you have for ArcGIS Pro.
