It would be great if you could Link the "Map views" to the "Layout views". So, if I navigate to something in one of my "Map views" it shows up on the "Layout View" tab as well. Without having to create a bookmark.
Is this functionality still lacking? I'm working on a huge map right now and it would be really handy to have the map and layout view linked.
That's an interesting work around. Almost sounds perfect. I'd love to see someone do a video on this to see exactly how to set it up and how it works.@GIS-Chops ?
I've used a workaround for this.
Create a map series on the first layout. Connect the following layouts to the fist.
Map series use as index the feature of interest in the first layout.
So updating the map series do update the other layouts too.
Thank you @TI! I gave that new idea kudos. I'm so glad you understand! 🙂
Also, thank you @KoryKramer for the screen shots etc. That's what we're looking for!
Yes, that's exactly what I need. It would be at least as useful to me as the current (new) functionality that is the other way around (or possibly even more useful). But I can see that both would be useful at times.
Yes, I appreciate that there could be many map frames in many layouts in some projects. But I suspect that there are a lot of projects out there that only have one or two layouts with one or two map frames each.
PS. Idea posted to: https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-pro-ideas/zoom-map-view-to-extent-of-a-layout-view-s-map/idi-p/1207477/jump-to/first-unread-message (referencing KoryKramer's post, specifically).
Another way to implement this, instead of a separate feature, would be to simply extend the existing feature to include both map frames and map views as extent sources, AND to make the feature available in both map views as well as in layouts. This would mean that you could also zoom one map view to the extent of another map view, or zoom one map frame to the extent of another map frame. Ie, allowing all permutations.
Hi @Anonymous User and @TI No, there isn't a 'Zoom To Layout View'... actually, I suppose it would have to be, when you're in a Map, have a 'Zoom to <the extent of a particular map frame from a specified layout>' 🙂
In this simple example, there are two layouts, each with four map frames. I could just as easily have 10 layouts with any number of map frames.
So when in the Map, what you're asking for is a command that would allow you to either 'zoom to last active map frame' (the opposite of this command):
And also to have a 'Zoom to Map Frame Extent' gallery (the opposite of this):
Correct? You could post a new idea to request that. One way you could do it for now, when working in a map frame, you could create a bookmark and then when you're out in any map in the project, use the bookmark to zoom to the extent of the map frame.
Ditto. I'd like to have a map view zoom to the extent of an existing layout view's extent.
Hi @KoryKramer is there a way to do the opposite? To click on the Map and have it zoom to the Layout View Extent? I think that's what I'm looking for. Thanks.
Hi @skykasko Thank you for your feedback. I understand the comparison with ArcMap on this one. Since Pro allows multiple layouts, there is a lot of added complexity in this type of design that was not necessary in ArcMap where there is only a single layout. That, combined with the consideration that there were many users/use cases where the automatic "syncing" of the map and layout in ArcMap was not wanted, led to the design included in Pro 2.9. I hope this explanation helps.
@KoryKramer: for clarification, does this new ability allow for the layout view to be synchronized with the map view, so that future changes to the map view extent will be reflected in the layout view? I believe this type of synchronization, as is already available between different map views using linked views in ArcPro, and has long been available for layouts in ArcMap, is what this idea is suggesting.
As @SarahHartholt just noted, ArcGIS Pro 2.9 brings a new context menu button, Zoom to Last Active Map. See that What's New help topic, Layouts section.

haven't used it myself, but apparently this is available in ArcPro 2.9 (skip ahead to 6:20 in the video)

I agree that it would be great to have this functionality! It's a big stumbling block for new GIS users to invest the time into ArcPro when the data isn't synched to the layout/map view and so they've chosen to not invest the time into ArcPro and stick with ArcMap.
Need this functionality as well!!
Wow ... it's surprising that this issue goes back to September 2017, and that nothing has been done about it.
Of course, we have to remember that developers don't actually use the software to do their work on a day-to-day basis like GIS analysts do, hence they don't understand the issue it causes for users.
For me, I regularly have to make apparent electromagnetic conductivity (ECa) soil maps with data at 6 depths. My map template in Pro has 7 map frames (including a location map) and 2 map layouts. All map frames in the layouts have the same extent and orientation (except the location map).
So I not only have to set the map extents mutiple times (currently I'm using bookmarks), but I have to do the map orientation multiple times as well. If I set the orientation in my map frame to 45 degrees (for example) to suit the shape of the field I'm working on, I shouldn't have to set the orientation of the map frame in my map layout as well. It creates twice as many steps and takes twice as long to what I was doing in ArcMap.
At the very least being able to link data frame extents to data frames in layouts, should be an option, switched on by default. And this capability should be extended across multiple map layouts as well.
To not have this addressed after 4 years is worrying, to say the least.
A response on this issue from the ESRI development team is WAY overdue.
In my opinion, there are different ways that this issue can be addressed to my satisfaction. But continuing to do nothing is unacceptable. At least one of the following options needs to be made a reality:
1. Enable dynamic linking between a map view and a layout map frame...just as we already have the ability to link two map views. If this "gets too complicated" with multiple map frames, stop punishing those of us who only need a single map frame.
2. Create a button/command (to be used on-demand) to zoom the layout map frame extent to match (or at least approximate) the current extent of the map view.
3. Expand arcpy capabilities to be able to read the current extent/camera information from the map view and then apply that same info to the layout map frame. If this is currently possible, I have yet to figure it out.
I believe we would all appreciate a meaningful response from ESRI staff on this issue.
Please add this functionality! I would like to export a map series of parks where infrastructure exists underground. I would like to display the information in a side-by-side view rather than on 1 map so that the viewer can clearly see the data without any overlapping points and lines.
I think the only way to achieve this currently is to use bookmarks. My current workflow will need to be: create 1 bookmark for each park. In layout view select map 1, activate bookmark 1, select map 2, activate bookmark 1, export PDF. Repeat until all locations have been exported.
Has this been rectified? I need it!!
Folks... The initial question was posted in September 2017. That is over 3 years ago. Back then ArcGIS Pro 2.0 was barely released (June 2017), then 2.1 (January 2018), 2.2 (June 2018), and so on until our latest build 2.6.3 (November 2020). Still, in all this time, the development team has ignored the plea of the people wanting ArcGIS Pro to link the map and layout views - the same thing ArcMap has done for as long as I can remember. C'mon ESRI...
I'm having a hard time believing and/or understanding how this functionality has not been added! This really does lead me to believe that the programmers of this software really don't use it. How do we get this functionality added to an up coming update?
It's counter-intuitive to have removed this functionality. It's not intuitive to think, oh i will just activate my map frame and then drag it to where i want it again with the scale i want etc because i've already done it in my map view. Please bring back the link. If necessary - make it an option that is off by default - link map to layout. Then those who want it can turn it on and those who don't are none the wiser but everyone wins
I am utterly dumbfounded that this capability is not the DEFAULT. But for it to not even be available as an option is completely absurd.
Yes please. You can link map views, you should be able to link map & layout views.
I have a county map with 20,000 parcels. I just want to print my layout with the map view I have already found. Why do I want to have to look it up again in the layout view. REALLY?
Totally agree. Having map and layout synch up automatically should be seamless.
This functionality would greatly improve our efficiency during collaborative exercises when reviewing areas and exporting artifacts. I'd like to use the map view for discussion and quickly jump to the layout view to export a graphic when needed. The requirement to create a bookmark or navigate to the same location in the layout view adds unnecessary clicks and time to the process.
Same issue reported here: https://community.esri.com/ideas/10757
It is especially frustrating to spend an hour or two in map view, zoomed to an extent that covers your project, getting symbols right, etc, then drag the map to a layout and be zoomed to the whole world! In Arc, I could be at 1:24000 in data view, and in layout view that would default to say, 1:56000 initially, but zoomed in on my project area. Set that to 1:24000. But most importantly, I can (In Arc), in data view, zoom, pan, and center on a feature, go to layout view, I'm zoomed, panned, and centered on that feature. In Pro, this is more mouse clicks as I now have to "Activate" something.
Totally agree. Sometimes I end up making a map, making the layout, then changing the extent of the map via the map tab. I liked how in ArcMap the map & layout were automatically linked. I don't want to have to change the extent in two places. A "link" or "reset" button would be great! Perhaps linked could be the default & there could be a button to unlink.
How is this functionality not already included? I don't see what the point of having linked views is if you can't even put it in the layout.
