Unable to add .lyr file from MyContent to MyMap

Hi,
  I'm unable to add a .lyr to "My Map" that I've uploaded to 'My Content'.
Why have the ability to upload .lyr files if can't add them to a map?

Do you have to have a subscription to do this? If so why not give a warning error.

.lyr files can't be added to web maps because they contain no data. .lyr files are supported for download and allow ArcGIS Desktop users who have access to the data to use the layer file.

Having a subscription will allow you to create a service out of the data referenced by the layer file. In this case, the data is uploaded to ArcGIS Online and served up.
