We are a small non-profit organisation in South Africa and as such cannot afford ArcGIS Server. I was very interested in the ability to create maps in ArcGIS Online and upload Shapefiles. I obviously rapidly found the shapefile gotchas such as number of points or vertices allowed. More problematic was the fact that the limited maps I could create are not available in Sharepoint as a basemap as sharepoint does not handle uploaded layers, only services. I was then interested to read about the up-coming services on ArcGIS Online that would allow serving of data as services. I don't want to sit around waiting though if they are a while away or if the pricing is going to be out of our budget. Please give me a timeline and approximate costs or at least the basis on which the cost scale will be calculated.

As far as uploading shapefiles, the size is limited by what the browser can display. Generally, less than 750 features. This is, however, impacted by the number of vertices your lines/polygons contain. You can consider generalizing your data before uploading it.

The planned time frame for release is in conjunction with ArcGIS 10.1, so first quarter 2012. That is our target. Unfortunately, pricing has not been finalized. I'd suggest contact your distributor for more information.

Thanks,

Mike
