I am trying to match symbols that were created by someone else. They appear to be a simple shape with short text inside the shape.

I know how to have the various simple shaped determined by by the contents of a given field, but I can't figure out how to add the text inside. They are not labels, as the labels are used for other data off to the side (client names, so I won't show them here)

If I go into the old layer and edit the symbol there, it appears that they are using "Basic point"

And there are no existing uploaded symbols

Uploaded symbols are only displayed for a user in their browser until browser cache is cleared. So if those symbols were uploaded ones, they would not show up for you. Were it me, the easiest thing to do it seems is to make those PNGs and add those as uploaded symbols, especially if all you need is 8 of them. This blog article might be useful:

Ah, I didn't realise uploaded images wouldn't show for me.

I am new here and my predecessors didn't leave much in the way of documentation. If there are previously made images I have yet to find them on our computers. If there is no way to do this directly in the symbol style then I agree with you: it's probably best if I recreate them and re-upload.

Here's an example:

Use the bookmarks in the upper right to zoom in. When you zoom to Detailed Damage Information

the symbols displayed are uploaded PNG symbols from NAPSG (though I have also been told those damage assessment symbols are being revised).
