shapefile additem upload listed in My Content as Desktop Application Template

shape file is 59 poly zip of 4 basic shape subfiles, 354Kb

I dont know what a Desktop Application Template is, but it doesnt sound like a zipped shape file.

when same task performed in AGOL for Org, AddItem creates Shapefile & Feature Service

You need to choose the contents of the shapefile in the dropdown list.  Perhaps we could change the default as I suspect more people will start to upload shapefiles rather than desktop application templates...
