I am trying to drag and drop a csv file into ArcGIS Online, but when the points display they are way off the map. Is there a particular coordinate system/datum that the coordinates need to be in? I am trying to use UTM's in NAD 83. Is there a way to specify what coordinate system you are using?

The basemap sets the coordinate system. The coordinates of the data must be in lat/long.

Thanks,

Mike

What about DATUM??? I can't find anything in ArcGIS help addressing datum. Isn't that kind of important?

If you're dealing with recent geographic coordinate systems: generally anything dated post 1983, then differences should be less than a meter or so. When you mix older datums like NAD27, OSGB 1936, DHDN, etc, then larger offsets occur.

Web mercator Auxiliary Sphere 3857 (which our basemaps use)  is on WGS84.

thanks,

Mike
