Pop Ups aren't popping up

Hi, I imported two shapefiles (using the zip method) and one shapefile displays pop ups normally. The other shapefile shows up, and I am able to scroll to configure the pop up, but the pop ups don't show up when I click on the symbol. Any ideas why this would happen to one shapefile and not the other?

Can you share your map with everyone and then post the URL to it here?

Thanks,

I am having the same problem.  Here is the URL to my "shared" site.

Shapefile came from ArcGIS 10 SP2.

I am testing the possibilities of using ArcGIS Online for "very novice" staff that may want to show their data on a map, create a basic website that embeds the map they created.  I am a very experienced GIS user and adding data and configuring Pop Ups seems very challenging for the "non GIS" professional....

Answer to my problem by finding other related posts at ESRI....Shapefiles don't support pop ups.  Service Sublayers do. Also csv files do.  I wish the online help was more helpful...especially for those who know very little about GIS or mapping will find this very time consuming and not want to do this.  I would guess that if an organization has not invested in ArcGIS Server, then the arcgis online may be limiting to some extent.

I think that if non-gis users can get to the point of using CSV files and collect GPS and save them out to GPX, then creating some useful popups will likely occur.

I am not trying to bash ESRI, but since Shapefiles are such a common format that has been around for years and is supported on various web technologies, then I would think it would make sense to have this kind of support available or at least directly address this in obvious ways in the online documentation.

I am a professional of 17 yrs and this took me several hours to figure out.  I did end up looking at the video for configuring popup and it mentions using a sublayer...Unless one works with web technology and/or other GIS layers, no one is going to know what a sub-layer is.  I then took my shapefile, added the XY field, converted it to CSV in Excel, drag and dropped it to ArcGIS online, the pop-up readily came up and I could configure them.  A lot of hoops to jump through if coming from ArcGIS and not using ArcGIS server or creating web services.

so....I have a work around.

Keep in mind, I am trying to develop a basic process to create an online map from either a GPX, CSV, or shapefile and see what can be created given the fact that the on-going maintenance of such a site is going to be performed by a low-end GIS person or someone with very little GIS/mapping background, especially a lack of ESRI terminology.

Thanks,
Nate

Popups are supported on shapefiles. I don't know why it didn't work for you.

Can you share your shapefile here? You should have a ZIP file already that represents your shapefile. The ZIP file should contain all associated files of the shapefile (ie., SHP, PRJ, DBF, SHX...).

Thanks,

Mike,
Here you go.  Let me know what might be going on.

Also, the drag/drop method of the zip to ArcGIS Online did not seem to work.  For CSV, it did.

I appreciate the help.

For some reason, the shapefile has no geometry for record 14...last name Farmer. This was causing an error when attempting to display the popups. I removed the record in ArcMap and was able to display the popups. See attached file.

Thanks,

Thanks,
I thought about that and I thought I had removed all of those.

I will try this again.
